2QB Big Board: Week 1 Kickoff Edition

Joe Siniscalchi updates his 2016 QB Big Board tiered rankings now that the regular has started and we’re in the heart of 2QB weekly management. …

One injury has already altered the paths of five quarterbacks. Teddy Bridgewater’s horrific knee injury has removed one QB2 from the fantasy landscape and put Shaun Hill on the map for a few weeks, forced Sam Bradford to be traded and start in the near future for a new team, opened the door for Carson Wentz to start in Bradford’s absence, and shut the door on Chase Daniel starting in Philadelphia.

Did you follow that? That’s the equivalent of a 2QB butterfly effect. One injury opening up and closing doors around the league. Odds are we won’t see another major move like this during the season, but it’s a reminder of how ahead of the game 2QBers need to be. If you already stashed Wentz, great for you. If you immediately grabbed Chase Daniel, and missed out on Wentz, I’m sorry for you. If you were able to flip Bradford and/or Hill and get Wentz, you are one shrewd person. Playing the market, and playing it correctly, is an integral part of playing in 2QB leagues. Keep an eye out on the situations for a lot of the fliers. One injury can force the trade of a Geno Smith, Josh McCown, Colin Kaepernick, and open up the doors for others to make starts as they get acclimated to the playbook. These are the opportunities we need to take advantage of.

With that in mind, here is my updated big board to kickoff the 2016 season.

Elite QB1Aaron RodgersGBLike the Peyton Manning of old, Rodgers is simply money in the bank. A down year for him was QB7.
Elite QB1Cam NewtonCARHe took an absolute beating against the Broncos, but he has the frame to support those hits. Looked great until that blow to the head.
Elite QB1Andrew LuckINDThe offensive line is a major concern, but I'm counting on a rebound from a healthy Luck.
Elite QB1Russell WilsonSEASliding him one slot ahead of Brees, I think Wilson carries less risk.
Elite QB1Drew BreesNOArguably in the best offense he's ever been in, Brees will be a plug and play option with a high floor and high ceiling for at least another year.
Reliable QB1Philip RiversSDThe more I think about it, the more I think the Chargers can boast one of the best offenses in this league if Melvin Gordon can find his groove and the team can stay healthy. Love Rivers as a sneaky bet to finish in the top-five.
Reliable QB1Eli ManningNYGDidn't look particularly impressive in preseason, but I'm not worried. Manning has had a high ceiling since playing in McAdoo's offense and will continue to do so as long as Odell Beckham Jr. is healthy.
Reliable QB1Carson PalmerARZHe's moved on from his meltdown to end 2015, but he hasn't looked like it in the preseason. Tied to an elite offense, Palmer seems like a safer pick but carries more risk when factoring his injury and turnover history.
Reliable QB1Tom BradyNEOn talent alone, he'd be in the top-four. It's hard to overlook your QB1 missing five out of thirteen regular season fantasy games.
Reliable QB1Ben RoethlisbergerPITHe will throw more without Le'Veon Bell, but this offense is suddenly lacking weapons behind Antonio Brown after a promising start to the offseason.
High End QB2Kirk CousinsWASCan he be Jay Gruden's new Andy Dalton? I like his prospects in a quietly potent offense with question marks in the run game.
High End QB2Marcus MariotaTENAfter being named a captain, the Titans expect Mariota to take a big leap forward. Even with limited weapons, he will be a weekly threat for blowup games if they make him run like they say they will.
High End QB2Derek CarrOAKI'm still a skeptic, but am a fan of the situation. Can he be as consistent as he was in 2015?
Reliable QB2Matthew StaffordDETOn paper it looks like Stafford can survive the loss of Calvin Johnson, but part of me thinks this offense can turn into a total dumpster fire with one or two injuries. Risk aside, I think he can be a summer steal and outperform his ADP.
Reliable QB2Blake BortlesJAXIt's official, I've been converted to a Bortles believer. The regression will be inevitable, but he looked good in preseason. In an offense flush with young talent, is it that inconceivable Bortles takes another step forward to becoming a good quarterback?
Reliable QB2Matt RyanATLI firmly believe nothing has changed for Ryan heading into this season compared to last season. He's due for positive regression. Starting to see him as a rich man's Alex Smith for fantasy.
Reliable QB2Tyrod TaylorBUFI want to put him higher, but I need a slightly larger body of work. Can be a major riser in my next update if he starts hot.
Reliable QB2Jameis WinstonTBHis opening slate of games is rough, but I think a healthy Vincent Jackson opens up the offense much more, which will create opportunities for Jameis.
Reliable QB2Andy DaltonCINTaking a wait and see approach on Dalton after losing many skill players and Hue Jackson.
Low End QB2Ryan FitzpatrickNYJHe needs to shake the rust off sooner or later, as he also has a brutal opening six games. The success of the Jets offense hinges solely on Fitzmagic, and I'm not all that confident in him at the moment.
Low End QB2Joe FlaccoBALUntil the dust settles on the Ravens offense, I truly have no idea what to expect. He can put up career numbers, but nobody knows who he will be handing the ball off to or throwing to.
Low End QB2Alex SmithKCHe is who we think he is - and there's nothing wrong with that.
Low End QB2Ryan TannehillMIAI hope you drafted him as a serviceable low-end QB2, you will be rewarded if he takes a big step forward and play as a QB1. If Parker remains injured, I'm not sure if that will happen just yet.
Low End QB2Jay CutlerCHILove his schedule, love his opportunity to thrive on volume, but I refuse to get myself caught up in believing Cutler is anything more than a low-end QB2.
Fringe QB2Dak PrescottDALLooked great in preseason and has an incredibly enticing opening slate. If he plays well, he could be a nice sell high. Love the offense and situation, but it's hard to evaluate a rookie who beat up on preseason defenses. Placing him here because of his ceiling.
Fringe QB2Carson WentzPHIHow quickly things can change. After looking like 2016 would be a redshirt season for Wentz, he now finds himself starting Week 1 of his rookie year. Taking a wait and see approach, given how quickly the situation in Philly has changed.
Fringe QB2Robert Griffin IIICLEHe put together a decent preseason, let's see if it carries over into the regular season without Josh Gordon. The good news is he will have plenty of chances to throw as the Browns figure to play from behind.
Fringe QB2Brock OsweilerHOUThe biggest wild card at quarterback, Osweiler will make the Texans offense sink or swim.
Fringe QB2Trevor SiemianDENHe looked competent leading the Broncos to a comeback win. Gary Kubiak's quarterbacks always have some value, so he's a great option as a QB3.
FliersSam BradfordMINThis is the best situation of his entire career, but don't expect much from him the first few weeks of the seaso as he learns the playbook and builds chemistry.
FliersBlaine GabbertSFThis offense has looked like a dumpster fire so far. Chip Kelly's system aside, I have zero faith right now that this offense will be able to move the ball. Injuries and lack of talent at wide receiver give Gabbert the smallest of ceilings.
FliersShaun HillMINHow long can he hold off Sam Bradford? It seems like the Vikings want Bradford to start ASAP.
FliersJimmy GaroppoloNEI'm having a tough time drafting Jimmy G., knowing I'm only getting four games out of him, but he's not a bad play if you're waiting for someone to pan out on waivers or believe in handcuffing Brady.
StashTony RomoDALI'd rather stash an injured Tony Romo on my bench than have Case Keenum.
FliersCase KeenumSTLHe's only starting because Jared Goff has looked awful. Nothing to see here.
FliersJared GoffSTLThe Eagles traded their starting quarterback because they believe in Wentz. Jared Goff is inactive because he can't even beat out Case Keenum.
FliersGeno SmithNYJIf anything were to happen to Fitzpatrick, Geno is a great QB2 play due to his offense, weapons, and rushing ability.
FliersColin KaepernickSFHard to see anyone starting him this season given all the drama.
FliersChase DanielPHIPoised to start once Bradford was traded, Daniel's window was instantly shut once the Eagles opted to let Wentz play. He'll likely only play if Wentz gets hurt.
